Underground work done with purpose—not shortcuts.

Water service construction is about more than replacing a pipe. The long-term performance of the system depends on careful utility coordination, safe excavation, approved piping, correct bedding and joint installation, documented testing and responsible backfill.

Opportunity Landscaping serves property owners, businesses and general contractors looking for a coordinated approach to underground construction. Our foremen bring over 25 years of field experience to project supervision.

From the first site walk to the final surface restoration, we focus on clear estimates, organized jobsites, experienced supervision and a finished result that respects the property.

Not Sure What You Need?

Tell us what is happening: low water pressure, a wet yard, an aging service, a planned new building or a city notice. We can help identify the next appropriate evaluation step.

Ask About Your Project ↗
Water service line vs. water main: A water service line typically connects an individual property to a water distribution main. A water main is part of the larger distribution network. Permits, ownership, pipe specifications and installation authority can differ significantly.
Project Coordination

Permits, right-of-way work & approved street closures.

Street-side water work often involves several departments—not just a crew and an excavator. We help assemble the approvals and logistics needed to keep a properly authorized project moving.

Permit Applications

Coordination of applicable excavation, water-service, plumbing and construction permits with the appropriate municipality and qualified trade professionals.

Street & Lane Closures

Planning for temporary traffic restrictions, approved street closures and required traffic-control measures when access to the water connection affects a roadway.

Right-of-Way Access

Coordination for excavation within streets, parkways, sidewalks and other public areas where the relevant road authority must provide permission.

Utility Locates

Illinois 811/JULIE notification, review of marked facilities and jobsite coordination before authorized excavation. Private utilities may require separate locating.

Testing & Inspections

Scheduling and coordination of required inspection stages, pressure/leakage checks, flushing, disinfection and acceptance where applicable.

Cleanup & Reinstatement

Temporary site protection followed by appropriate backfill and restoration of affected lawns, sidewalks, drives, hardscapes and other areas.

Important: Roadways cannot be closed or excavated without permission. The road authority, municipality and utility owner control approvals. Water-service plumbing and system connections are performed by appropriately licensed professionals or authorized personnel as required.

Heavy-Duty Craftsmanship

What a quality underground installation really involves.

We build scopes around applicable municipal specifications, engineered plans, manufacturer instructions and recognized AWWA/OSHA practices—not one generic installation recipe for every soil and pipe type.

Utility Verification & Layout

Identify known facilities, secure appropriate locates, plan an approved route, verify access and flag conflicts before digging begins. Underground surprises are documented and addressed before proceeding.

Excavation Safety

A qualified competent person evaluates conditions and required protections. Shoring, trench shields or approved sloping/benching, safe access, spoil placement and water control are addressed according to OSHA’s excavation rules.

Approved Depth & Frost Protection

Pipe cover, installation depth, clearances and utility separation follow the local water authority’s specifications and approved plans. We do not use a one-size-fits-all depth assumption for every municipality.

Engineered Bedding & Haunching

Where required, trench bottoms are prepared with suitable bedding, uniform support and carefully placed material alongside the pipe. Sharp debris and unsuitable fill are not placed directly against piping.

Specified Pipe & Fittings

Copper, approved polyethylene, ductile iron, pressure-rated PVC or other specified piping may be used depending on the application. Pipe class, fittings, restraint, corrosion protection and approvals matter.

Professional Connections

Joints, valves, service taps, corporation stops, curb stops and transitions are installed or coordinated through the proper qualified trades and water authority, using approved materials and procedures.

Testing & Water Quality

Required inspection, flushing, hydrostatic or leakage testing, disinfection and sampling are coordinated before activation or concealment, following the governing specifications and utility requirements.

Controlled Backfill & Restoration

Backfill material, placement, lift thickness, compaction and any testing follow the approved restoration standard. Drives and roadways receive specified base and surface repairs—not just loose soil pushed into the trench.

Standards reference: Applicable AWWA installation/disinfection standards (including C600 for ductile iron, C605 for PVC/PVCO and C651 for water main disinfection when required), OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P, local utility specifications and state/local plumbing rules. Exact methods depend on the project and authority having jurisdiction.

Residential & Neighborhood-Scale Construction

Water line construction in neighborhoods like yours.

From neighborhood street excavations to careful trench work across residential lawns, these examples illustrate the kinds of situations we can assess and coordinate for new services, replacements and upgrades.

Experienced Leadership

25+ years of foreman experience. A construction mindset on every job.

Our foremen bring decades of combined field lessons into jobsite coordination, excavation planning, crew supervision and material handling. Our work is approached with respect for the property, surrounding utilities, public access and the people who rely on the finished system.

  • Written, clearly defined work scopes
  • Appropriate licensed-trade coordination
  • Construction and restoration planning
  • Communication through project milestones
The Opportunity Standard

You only get one chance to install what goes underground properly.

We emphasize the steps that matter after the trench disappears: appropriate pipe and fittings, proper support, qualified connections, inspection and testing, suitable backfill and responsible surface restoration.

PREPARE WELL. BUILD CORRECTLY. RESTORE RESPONSIBLY.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers before you break ground.

Can you replace the water service line from the street to my house?
We can evaluate the job and coordinate the appropriate excavation, approved materials, qualified water-service installation, inspection and restoration. The municipality or water utility determines the authorized connection method and any division of owner/utility responsibility.
Can you obtain permits and arrange a street closure?
We help prepare and coordinate applicable permit applications, right-of-way requests, lane restrictions and approved traffic-control requirements. No contractor can guarantee permission to close a street; the local authority must authorize it.
What materials are used for a new water line?
The approved materials depend on jurisdiction, system, line size and design. Copper and certain approved plastics may be used for services; water mains may be specified in ductile iron, pressure-rated PVC or other materials. We follow the governing specifications rather than assuming one material suits every project.
How deep do you bury a water line?
Burial depth depends on local frost-protection requirements, the water utility’s standards, other underground facilities and approved plans. Depth is confirmed for the actual job location; it should not be guessed from a generic rule.
Do you work on commercial water mains?
We evaluate commercial and larger underground utility projects, including work under general contractors. Project acceptance depends on plans, equipment access, appropriate licensed professionals, utility approvals, bonding and contract requirements.
Can you help with a lead water service line?
We can review the excavation and coordination scope for an approved lead service line replacement. The utility and authorized plumbing professionals determine the lawful approach and material requirements. Where full replacement is required, partial replacement should not be marketed as an equivalent substitute.
Will you repair my yard, sidewalk or driveway?
We offer landscape and hardscape restoration and can include pavement or concrete restoration coordination in the written proposal. Restoration must satisfy applicable municipal standards, which may differ from the original surface.
Do you offer free estimates?
Contact us with the property address, photos, an explanation of the issue and the approximate distance from the street or meter if known. We can discuss the next step and determine what site assessment is needed. Specialty diagnostics, engineered plans, permits or related fees may be quoted separately.
